Mentoring

After formal training is complete, participants know the concepts but may lack the pragmatic knowledge that can only be acquired through experience. Left on their own most participants will have to work through two to three projects before they internalize the learnings and use them consistently in practice.

Mentoring shortens this period by backing up the formal training with an onsite expert for part or the entire duration of a software project. The task of the mentor is to lead the participants through their project and accelerate the development of each participant into an experienced Project Manager. The participant avoids making the common errors frequently made by inexperienced managers, errors that can compromise customer relationships and project success.

Mentoring can be done from either a look over the shoulder approach where the mentor offers commentary on the work performed, to a learn by example approach where the mentor performs and explains the work to the project manager, to planned remote interactions with an expert coach/mentor, via email and teleconference.
